Maria Sharapova is an influential women's Tennis
player, she has made a name for herself by pushing herself to the limit while
playing her favorite sport. Maria Sharapova is originally from Russia; however,
now Sharapova lives in Florida. Maria Sharapova is currently 25 years old and
ranked World Number 2. Maria Sharapova joined the pro status in 2001; therefore
she has been on the tour for going on 12 years. Currently, Sharapova's stats
include 56-10 wins-loses during the 2012 season. However, Sharapova's whole
duration of the tour has consisted of 468-114 wins-loses. Sharapova has an
incredible record and as a result she is known as one of the highest paid
female athletes, bringing in a whopping $22 million in 2009.
Tennis is not the only thing that Maria Sharapova
participates in; she also has her own Maria Sharapova Foundation. The
Foundation is committed to helping children all around the world achieve their
dreams. In addition, Maria Sharapova is an ambassador for Goodwill's United
Nations Development Program. The Maria Sharapova Foundation Scholarship for
Youth from the Chernobyl affected areas will be awarded five-year scholarships
to 12 students from the Belarusian State Academy of the Arts. Sharapova is
highly involved in giving back to children who need aid in achieving their
dreams. Other than giving back to the world, Sharapova is an entrepreneur.
Sharapova has her own clothing line, which includes Tennis apparel and shoes.
Sharapova has even gone into the candy making business; aspiring to be like
Willy Wonka. These two business adventures are supposed to show Maria's fun,
fashionable, sweet side.
Concealed in Maria Sharapova’s record lays four
Grand Slam titles. Grand Slams are also known as the majors, there are four
different places that hold the Grand Slam events. There is the French Open,
Australia Open, U.S. Open, and (my favorite) Wimbledon. All of these events are
exciting to watch and they pay the most in prize money. Maria Sharapova won her
first Grand Slam title at the age of 17 at Wimbledon.
There are many things that set Maria Sharapova
apart from her competition, and that lies within her playing style. Sharapova
is a difficult opponent. Maria Sharapova is skilled and aggressive; Sharapova
is widely known for her grunt when she hits the ball. Some of the greatest
qualities of Sharapova is that she has excellent power, depth, and is able to
catch the right angles while preforming her ground stroke. An exceptionally
wonderful defender of her area, eyes are always on the ball no matter what. In
addition, Sharapova has great speed for her height, an enormous 6’2”.
Watching Sharapova play her match’s is incredibly entertaining!

I enjoyed reading your post and it was really informative. Did you ever find out where in Ruissa was she from?
ReplyDeleteI like how you made a point to include not only her tennis abilities and statistics, but also her life outside of sports; it shows that she is a well rounded athlete. Also, the fact that Sharapova won the Grand Slam title at 17 is amazing! I cannot imagine winning such a pretigious competition at the age we are now. Great post!
ReplyDeleteIt's unbelievable that she's been able to do so much within a meager 25 years! Besides being a world-renown tennis player, I had no idea she has so many side projects- she really is remarkable. How successful has Maria's business ventures, like her clothing line and candy products, been?
ReplyDeleteI appreciate how you included her life outside of tennis, but as far as tennis is concerned do you think she has reached her peak? Also (this is sort of off topic), do you think the coming rule change that forbids grunting will make a difference in Sharapova's play, since she is sort of known for her grunting?
ReplyDeleteMaria Sharapova is from Nyagan Russia near the Ob River. So far Sharapova has been very successful in her business ventures. She has been able to expand her products and has even been able to come out with a special Halloween sour candy to contribute to her candy line. Also, Ben, personally I think that this new rule banning grunting may hurt Maria's play because that is where she originates her power from. It may hurt her but personally I think the rule change should not happen because it is not hurting anyone when you play it just shows aggression.
